Poverty

Fuel for the fire
A leaden anchor
I am drowning
Burning alive
Holding my face
Just above the surface
Nothing helping
My eternally
Aching head
Bloodshot eyes
Final notice
Gasping for air
Society's foot
On my face
Pushing
      down
         Ever
                So
                     Slowly.
Desperation
Is all we know
At the moment

  1. perhaps desperation is all we have ever known, at any moment. at least the poor have more access to the truth, live closer to the real world. but i don't mean to praise being poor. only the rich romanticize poverty -- the poor know it sucks. i would like a big enough stack of 100's to buy books and time and isolation -- what else is of value??

  2. Deep, and puts one through the wringer. Good job! The desperation of true poverty, of no recourse anywhere, of life losing its trappings before your eyes and revealing itself in bare, barren, bones. I agree with James above--books and time and isolation, yes. Nothing else matters.
